Why PDF Redaction Matters
Sharing unredacted PDFs containing personal data can violate GDPR, HIPAA, and CCPA regulations. Before sharing a document publicly or with third parties, redact all personally identifiable information (PII): names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, financial account numbers, and medical record identifiers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the redaction permanent?
The redaction draws filled rectangles (black boxes by default) over matching text positions on every PDF page. These boxes become part of the PDF page content and cannot be removed by a normal PDF reader. However, this is a visual redaction — the underlying text stream in the PDF source may still be present. For legally certified redaction where the text data must be provably removed, use Adobe Acrobat's certified redaction feature. For standard business and personal use, this tool's visual redaction is sufficient.
Can I redact email addresses, phone numbers, and SSNs automatically?
Yes. The quick presets automatically add regex patterns for common sensitive data types: email addresses, US phone numbers, Social Security Numbers (SSN), credit card numbers, IP addresses, and dates. Click a preset chip to add it to the redaction list, then click Redact PDF.
Can I use custom text patterns?
Yes. Type any word, phrase, or regular expression pattern in the custom input field. Enable the regex toggle to use regular expressions for advanced pattern matching. For example, use a regex to match all strings that look like employee IDs, bank account numbers, or any proprietary identifier format.
